Ukraine to celebrate Pancake Day

Ukrainians to celebrate Pancake Week (Masliana) on February 20-26 - the last week before the Great Fast. On this day the spring is greeted with Pancake Day.

According to Ukrainian tradition, on Pancake Week the main character of the table was varenyk (dumpling), but not pancake. Varenyk symbolized moon, which was associated with childbirth. That's why Pancake Week is considered more as feminine holiday.

Masliana is famous not only for its wide tables with hearty pancakes, but for massive festivals, songs and dances.
